As the temperatures continue to soar it becomes easier and easier for dogs to succumb to heat stroke. Here are some physical signs to look for if you suspect heat stroke:

Tacky mucus membranes (the gums)

Dark red gums

Unable to or unwilling to stand

Rectal temperature above 104 degrees. If your dogs temperature is 106 you have a dire emergency. Irreversible damage will begin at the cellular level and the organs start to fail.

So what should you do if you suspect heat stroke?

NEVER APPLY ICE OR SUBMERGE IN ICE WATER. This will cause constricting of the blood vessels and your dogs core will be unable to cool. And this may even cause the reverse HYPOTHERMIA

Apply cold rags, cloths to the pads of the feet.

Offer cool water, DO NOT FORCE IT.

If you have rubbing alcohol you can put a little bit in the cool water before applying the wet rags to the pads

GET TO YOUR VET ASAP

There is a lack of instruction on this and gluing ears is not the easiest process to explain. However, is the easiest thing to do You could draw a picture but this is one of those instances where you sit there saying “you go like this” lol …frustrating.

I would trust Valentino off lead here in CT, in the unfenced yard back on four acres surrounded by trees but never on the sidewalk or in public places. It’s just not safe, it doesn’t matter how well he is trained, there are tooooo many variables, personalities, added to the mix.. I trust him and his judgement, he can read Mark and I very well and we can read him. He is almost human and his expressions are hilarious.

One morning when I was about six months pregnant Mark made breakfast and as we were talking we heard an ear-piercing howl followed by screaming. We got up looked out the window and there was a dog with the structure of a greyhound scooting around about five feet off the sidewalk in the road screaming in pain. It was calm other than this. The morning rush was over on the UES. The owner was screaming as the dog screamed louder. I knew by the way the dog was scooting this had to be a spinal injury. The dog was moving at what at the time appeared to be 50 miles an hour all over the first lane in the road, running on pure adrenaline as a result of shock. Your not supposed to move anyone with a possible spinal injury but there was NO avoiding the movement. With minimal said to Mark I grabbed a blanket, barked as much info as I could at him as he ran after me down seven flights of stairs (there was no time for an elevator). I was pregnant and Mark would not let me get to close so I watched as Mark assisted and I gave him any info I could over the noise. We then ran one block with this dog on a make shift blanket stretcher to be turned away. Mark and I looked at each other as the tech sipped his coffee and shook his head; we were stunned. I know for a fact there is always a vet on call at this facility but there was no time to discuss the techs ill decision. The long and short of this situation was a taxi speeding by, a well-trained dog off lead taking a look around a car which was parked on the street and he was taken away by this taxi. By the time this dog made it to AMC the injuries were so extensive he had to be put down.

As my dogs breeder, owner and protector I would NOT ever let my sams off lead in public, just as I would NEVER let my daughter walk five feet away from me in a shopping mall. YOU JUST NEVER KNOW. Be safe and be responsible, respect and love your dogs because they wouldn’t think twice about jumping into a fire after you or more recently in the news crawling on broken legs after a tornado back to their owner.

I am hoping he will hit the show ring when he is six months old. This boy is very deserving of the Championship title, with outrageous length of leg, an amazingly strong front end assembly, his stunning good looks command attention where ever he goes. Type just like his grandmother Adianna and great grandfather Jasper (2007 number one male sam in the country). And super white to boot. Valentino and Arella were an amazing combination!!!!
